Over the years, the chiropractic profession has continuously evolved and with medicine turning to holistic alternatives, the utilization of chiropractic has steadily been on the rise.
Still, one of the questions I often get is, “Is chiropractic care right for me?”
I want to preface this blog by saying, chiropractic care is not for everyone, BUT many people can benefit from the positive outcomes that chiropractic care can provide. If you’re interested in learning more about chiropractic and how you it can positively impact your wellness, I invite you to read on.
Traditionally, chiropractic care has been utilized to correct issues with the spine. For years, chiropractors used adjustments to correct what was then described as “subluxations” of the spine. Subluxation was a term used to describe a joint that was not moving well and many chiropractors would tell patients that their vertebrae were “out of place” or that they had a “slipped disc”.
With the advancement of research in the field of chiropractic and manual therapy, we have now learned that, in fact, vertebral subluxations (in the chiropractic sense) do not exist, but other dysfunctions of the spine can lead to altered movement patterns/strategies and increased pain within certain areas.
With a more evidence-based approach, the scope of chiropractic has evolved. Chiropractors are now well equipped to diagnose and provide treatment for a number of neuromusculoskeletal complaints – including (but not limited to) low back pain, neck pain, numbness or tingling into the extremities, rotator cuff tears, hip pathologies, patellofemoral (knee) pain, shin splints, and many other issues. Chiropractors are also primary-care practitioners, meaning that you do not need a referral from your medical doctor to see a chiropractor.
Many people believe that unless they are involved in sports or strenuous physical activity, that a chiropractor would not be of any use to them.
However, if you are looking to optimize your overall wellness, chiropractic may be a great adjunct therapy to add to your current lifestyle. Chiropractic is not just rehab-based therapy for when you are injured but can also be a wellness therapy to help optimize your everyday life.
