Preparing for my fourth year as an Osteopathic Student – Karah Klodt, RMT
23 Jul 2019
Since exams finished at the Canadian College of Osteopathy in April, it has been nice to enjoy the summer and take a well deserved rest however I am anxious to get back to school like always! The journey from a third year osteopathy student to a fourth year student is a big one. In my fourth year I will be taking courses in Pathophysiology, Stomach and Esophagus, the Hepatic System, Small and Large Intestine, Radiology and Pharmacology and the Lungs. This is an exciting year because it is the first year that I will be learning to treat the viscera (organs!).
Visceral or Organ manipulation is one of the main aspects that differentiates osteopathy from many other forms of manual hands on therapy. Most forms of manual therapy predominantly focus on restoring the balance of muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons. Visceral treatment is something that is fairly unique to osteopathy and involves considering the movements and quality of the internal organs in treating common problems such as back pain and neck pain.
Osteopathic Manual Practitioners are trained to look at the entire body and how it is working as a unit. They look at the body as a whole in order to understand the root of the pain which may not always be where the body is symptomatic. This is what makes learning Osteopathy so interesting! Everyone is different and every case is specific to each individual. Can’t wait to see what 4th year as an Osteopathy Student has in store for me. Stay tuned to follow me and my journey!
