When sciatica flares up, most people do what they’ve been told to do for years: stretch it out.
Toe touches. Figure-4 stretches. Long glute holds on the living room floor while wondering why things feel worse, not better.
As a physiotherapist in Guelph I want you to know about an important distinction that often gets missed:
Sciatica is nerve pain, not a muscle tightness problem.
And treating nerve pain like a tight hamstring can slow recovery instead of speeding it up.
In the early stages of sciatica, the sciatic nerve is often irritated or compressed as it exits the lower back or travels through the hip and leg.
When a nerve is already sensitive, stretching it increases tension along its entire length, including the irritated area.
A few key reasons stretching backfires early on:
If you’re in the early phase of sciatica (especially if pain travels down the leg or below the knee), it’s best to avoid stretches that reproduce or worsen symptoms, including:
A simple rule of thumb:
If a stretch causes shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or lingering symptoms afterward, it’s not helping.
Rather than stretching the sciatic nerve, early rehab often focuses on gentle nerve mobilization, sometimes called nerve flossing.
The goal isn’t to pull on the nerve, it’s to help it move smoothly and reduce sensitivity without increasing irritation.
How to do it:
Dosage:
If symptoms increase or linger afterward, stop and reassess.
Sciatica isn’t something you have to “push through” or stretch away. The right approach depends on where the nerve is irritated, how sensitive it is, and what stage you’re in.
At our clinic, physiotherapy for sciatica focuses on:
If stretching has been making things worse, you’re not broken, and you’re not doing anything wrong. You’re just dealing with a nerve that needs a smarter plan.
If you’d like guidance on what stage you’re in (and what actually makes sense for your body right now), that’s exactly what we’re here for.
