How will your Naturopathic Doctor diagnose B12 deficiency?
Diagnosis of B12 deficiency requires a thorough intake during your visit and a simple, inexpensive blood test. This test will quantify the amount of B12 present in the body. Your Naturopathic Doctor is able to order this test for you. It is possible to take too much vitamin B12 so please be sure to supplement under the advisement and supervision of your Naturopathic Doctor.
Should you get injections or take an oral B12 supplement?
Some people may have an aversion to needles and may find the B12 shot uncomfortable, so some patients prefer taking an oral supplement on a daily basis. However, because vitamin B12 absorption via the gut is less effective than an injection, a higher oral dose is often needed. You might need to take three or more pills daily, to meet the necessary dose.
“How often do I need to get injections?”
This will vary greatly from patient to patient. Most patients come in for weekly injections for 6-8 weeks and then maintenance injections bi-weekly or monthly. Again, this varies greatly and will be determined in your visit with your naturopathic doctor.
What is the cost?
One, standard B12 injection is $12.00 (no HST applicable).
