What is Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a therapeutic, non-invasive, holistic healthcare discipline.

Chiropractors are experts in assessing, diagnosing and treating complaints of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Our Guelph Chiropractors utilize evidence-informed guidelines to create an individualized plan of action for your specific needs and goals.

Our Guelph Chiropractors focus on treating a variety of biomechanical and musculoskeletal conditions including low back pain, neck pain, headaches, tendentiousness, shin splints, hip pain, shoulder pain, tennis/golfer’s elbow, repetitive strain injuries, sports injuries, never entrapments, extremity injuries, and osteoarthritis conditions.

They primarily treat these conditions using hands-on techniques, acupuncture, dry needling, Shockwave therapy and by prescribing exercises that suit your specific situation. Before creating an individualized treatment plan, our Chiropractors consider your personal preferences to certain treatments, the most recent peer-reviewed evidence, and their own clinical experience. These three elements are the foundation for generating the best conservative treatment plan possible.

Chiropractic treatment plans are individualized and goal-oriented. They focus on long-term success with specific short-term targets to monitor progression. Chiropractic techniques commonly utilized in practice include soft tissue therapy, acupuncture (electro-acupuncture and dry needling), joint mobilizations and manipulation, shockwave therapy and therapeutic exercise.

Did You Know?

Chiropractors are also well equipped to help optimize your biomechanics in order to maximize your performance in your current activities (i.e., yoga, pilates, running, strength training, golf, etc.). If you are not experiencing any specific pain, but want to improve your performance, Chiropractic care can support that!

If you are looking for chiropractic care that is focused on your individual needs and is based on the best (and most recent!) available evidence, look no further than our trusted Guelph Chiropractor.

What to Expect During Your Assessment

Your initial assessment is about 60 minutes in length. It will include a comprehensive history of your complaint and overall health, a focused physical examination of all relevant areas, a discussion of the clinical impression, an outline of the plan of management, and your first treatment!

The history allows your chiropractor to get a thorough understanding of what you have been experiencing, along with an indication of your current lifestyle habits that may be related to your pain or dysfunction. The physical examination is important because it allows the chiropractor to determine the root cause of the issue(s) and will help outline a specific treatment plan. Once your initial assessment is complete, you will receive a brief treatment, and sometimes movements/exercises to perform at home. Throughout the process, our chiropractors encourage you to ask questions so that you may get an appreciation of what is happening – this will allow you to become an integral part of your own rehabilitation experience.

Modalities Used:

This is a hands-on technique that works to relax tight muscles. It is often combined with adjustments but also produces great as a stand-alone treatment.

Chiropractic adjustments are one of the most common complementary treatment options used in both adults and children.1 An adjustment is a controlled force directed at the joints of the spine or other joints in the body which causes them to move slightly more than they would on their own.1 This causes the pressure in the joint to change, and you may hear a slight popping sound.

Dry needling: Dry needling is a form of acupuncture that chiropractors with additional training can perform where a thin needle is inserted into muscles or tendons. The needle is moved with a pistoning motion inside the tissue which relaxes the area, promotes blood flow, and causes a mild inflammatory response. Dry needling can be particularly helpful for tendon injuries which are frequently slow to recover as it may jump-start the healing process. This technique can be slightly uncomfortable at times, however, the treatment itself is very quick and often completed in a matter of seconds!

Shockwave Therapy accelerates the healing process by delivering strong energy pulses to the affected area for short periods of time. Shockwave therapy creates an acoustic pressure wave (that is faster than the speed of sound!) that is transmitted to the body’s tissues. This helps to stimulate the metabolism and enhance blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue.  The strong energy pulses stimulate cells in the body that are responsible for bone and connective tissue healing.

Home exercises and stretches are key elements to recovery and our chiropractor can get you started on what to do. Staying active even when you are in pain is a good thing. Remember, motion is lotion!
