What is a Doula?
The word ‘doula’ is from the ancient Greek and literally means, “a woman who serves”. In present day, this sentiment remains true: a doula is a trained, experienced birth professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and educational support to a mother before, during, and after a birth. Studies show that when doulas attend birth, labours are shorter, have fewer complications, babies are healthier and latch to the breast more easily.
Doulas understand that birth impacts the mother and child well beyond what we even measure. It is a key experience during a woman’s lifetime. As such, it is an incredibly emotional time for a mother and her partner. The doula’s role is to nurture and protect a mother’s birth experience, and to ensure, as much as possible, that it meets the desired birthplan. There are 2 types of doulas: birth/labour and post-partum. Birth doulas are trained in the physiology of birth, and can help facilitate communication with healthcare providers. They are NOT midwives, as the doula’s role is purely emotional, physical and educational rather than clinical or medical. From a pre-birth meeting to a continuous presence during labour, the birth doula physically and emotionally supports a birthing mother and her partner.
Doulas bear witness to your birth experience, and early parenting days. We offer love, compassion, a non-judgmental ‘ear’, and have YOUR experience foremost in our minds. What we receive in return is the honour of having witnessed a truly sacred rite of passage in a fellow woman’s life!
